Turkey Tail | Unpacking The Research
The Basics
Turkey Tail, a medicinal mushroom, has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. Modern research indicates potential benefits for immune health due to its polysaccharopeptide content, which may stimulate the immune system. Some studies suggest it could also support gut health and have anti-cancer properties. However, while current research results look promising, the results have not yet been deemed as conclusive by the EFSA, please form your own opinion of the scientific conclusions below.
Turkey Tail Research
Immune System
This study reveals that both the mycelium and the fruiting body of Turkey Tail have the potential to activate different components of the immune system.
“Both aqueous and solid fractions of FS triggered large and dose-dependent increases in immune-activating pro-inflammatory cytokines”

Gut Health
A 2013 test-tube study mirrored these results finding a Turkey Tail extract to have modified the gut bacterial composition by increasing the population of beneficial strains of gut bacteria Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus while reducing potentially harmful bacteria Clostridium and Staphylococcus

Cancer
**Turkey Tail is not a replacement to convenvtional cancer therapy - However, there is growing evidence it may be beneficial in tandem with conventional therapies including chemo therapy, always consult your doctor before use**
[1] "Preclinical in vitro and in vivo data suggest that PSP[ = Polysaccharopeptide Present In Turkey Tail Mushroom] has immunomodulatory (largely immune stimulisation) effects that may be beneficial, particularly when combined with anticancer treatment."

Meta-Analysis Insights: A 2007 meta-analysis included multiple randomized controlled trials (RCTs) totaling 8,009 patients and indicated an Overall Survival (OS) hazard ratio of 0.88 (12% Lower risk of death) Simply put, this large study from 2007 showed that adding PSK from Turkey Tail to the usual treatment helped people with gastric cancer live longer.
[3] “C. versicolor (Turkey Tail) polysaccharides, including PSP and PSK, have been shown to demonstrate anti-cancer effect in vivo following oral administration” And from the same study: “The other well-established mechanism of the anti-cancer effect by C. versicolor (Turkey Tail) is via immuno-stimulant action, as evidenced by their ability to increase the production of cytokines.”
